101 Frickin' Rawsome Recipes, by Chris Kendall

    If you are ready to eat like the natural great ape you are, then this recipe book is for you! “101 Frickin’ Rawsome Recipes,” by Chris Kendall, provides an excellent guide to succeeding with the low-fat, raw vegan diet. Not only are these recipes super fast and easy, but eating this way is also delicious and very affordable (simply fruits, veggies, and leafy greens).

    This booklet provides simple and enlightening information on nutrition, food combining, sequential and mono-eating, and the tools of the trade (such as the “almighty VitaMix,” good knives, shredders, and slicers). His recipes include fruit smoothies, green smoothies, sweet soups, savory soups, tasty salads, hearty slaws, cool noodle dishes, mineral-rich stews, and of course special dishes. Some of my favorites are: Blueberry Lagoon, Mango Gazpacho, and Sergeant Pineapple Pepper. :=) He even breaks down the calorie information for every recipe and provides a sample meal plans for people with different caloric needs. His style is very relaxed, yet passionate, and often hilarious. Watching some of his 100+ video blog posts will give you the full effect, and his personality also shines brightly through his writing.

    One thing I really appreciate about Chris’ diet, is the common sense approach he takes with it. Even though he is an expert on nutritional science, his focus is on what is being modeled for us in nature. He points out that while most of us have established the habit of eating myriad foods together, this is not our natural behavior. By observing any wild animal, one can see that they eat the foods they are physiologically designed for, one at a time, usually exclusively until full. While he is a big advocate of mono-meals (any single fruit, from hungry to full), most of his recipes include savvy food combining for the best of both worlds. And from my research on great apes, they are eating pretty frickin’ rawsome too!

    What I find most inspiring about the “Banana Commander” is that he actually walks his talk, both confidently and with humility. After living this way for eight years, now at 31, he could probably pass for 21. His philosophy was originally inspired by Dr. Doug Graham, who wrote The 80/10/10 Diet (a more in-depth read into both scientific and common sense nutrition). After hearing Doug speak and witnessing his powerful life-force, Chris went 100% and never looked back. He inspired me to read the 80/10/10 (and of course this recipe book), and has been the single greatest influence in my personal transition from being a part-time raw-foodie (unaware of the effect of fat on blood sugar metabolism) to consistently eating at least 80% low-fat raw vegan… feeling better and better! Whenever I end up going 100% for more than a day or two, I start noticing increased energy, clarity, strength and ease in my body. It seems that the more I do this, the less I’m tempted by other foods.
